German artists Wolfgang Winter and Berthold Hörbelt proposed a sculpture called Crate Horst to stand in Kielder Water. The structure, a tower capped by an illuminated bright yellow room made from bottle crates, was planned to be located some distance out from the north shore of the lake, close to Plashetts Quarry.

Two small wind turbines would provide power for the lighting and the entire structure would have been an orientation point for walkers on the Lakeside Way north shore as well as a softly light beacon out on the water on dark evenings.

Although it is hoped to be able to realise Crate Horst at some point in the future, the project is currently on hold awaiting funding.
