FleaFolly Architects were commissioned to create a sculptural perch sited in the lake for Ospreys and other birds at Kielder Water. Their artwork, Plashetts Rising, references the submerged Plashetts Quarry located nearby from which stone was extracted during the making of Kielder Water's dam between 1976 and 1980, as well as René Magritte's 1959 surrealist painting The Castle of the Pyrenees and Michael Heizer's monumental sculpture Levitated Mass.
Plashetts Rising is located off the shoreline close to Plashetts Quarry, on the north shore of Kielder Water. To get there, follow the Lakeside Way multi-user track from either Kielder Castle (7 miles), or Hawkhope Carpark (5 miles) until you see a sign leading down to the viewpoint that is situated on the shoreline close to the sculpture's location.
FleaFolly Architects was commissioned to creat Plashetts Rising as part of Kielder Water & Forest Park's Heritage Lottery funded project Living Wild. They worked with sculptor and theatre prop maker Stephen Pyle and steel fabricator Andy Hardy to make the work, which was originally planned to be installed in 2017 on an existing foundation close to Plashetts Quarry. Unseasonably high water levels that year resulted in the installation being delayed until late 2018, however, by february 2019 the water levels has risen sufficiently for the sculpture to appear as intended out in the lake.

Plashetts Rising is located vetween Robin's Hut, to the east and Salmon Cubes to the west. Also to the west is Plashetts Incline, an old tramway dating from the end of the C19th that was used to lower fully loaded wagons from the coal mine up on the hill, down to the now flooded railway station in the valley.
