Kielder column is a stock of pink sandstone blocks arranged in courses around a core. The surfaces have been closely worked by hand to create the sense of an ascending spiral throughout the column. The artist John Maine created Kielder Column in 1990 for the Gateshead Garden Festival. It was re-erected at Bakethin Weir in 1999.
There is public parking at Bakethin Weir which is sign-posted off the C200. The sculpture is a short 2-minute walk along the weir access road.
Alternatively for visitors using the Lakeside Way south shore, Kielder Column lies a short waymarked detour off the track, between Kielder Village and Leaplish Waterside Park.
A good way to explore all the artworks along the Lakeside Way is by cycle. Bikes should be to at least hybrid cycle grade with decent country tyres for the changing terrain of Kielder Water & Forest Park.

Kielder Column is sited next to Bakethin Weir, a structure that separates the main lake from an upper section, preventing unsightly mudflats appearing when the main lake level is lowered or 'drawn down', and also creating a nature reserve for nesting birds and other wildlife.
A half mile to the east along the Lakeside Way lies Mirage deck, and to the west, Kielder Castle Visitor Centre.
